Yankauer Nature Preserve

From the 4-way stop sign (routes 45 and 480) in Shepherdstown, drive towards Sharpsburg. Go about 1/4 mile and turn left onto Shepherd Grade Road (the road that angles in to Rt. 480 across from the Shepherd College football field.) Travel about 1 and 1/2 miles and bear left at the "Y" intersection onto Scrabble Road. (Bearing right will take you to the Training Center.) About 1 1/2 miles further, a road intersects on the left with Scrabble Road. Stay to the right. After another .5 mile, stay on Scrabble Road as it turns left at yet another "Y." Drive two additional miles and turn right onto Rt. 5/4, Whitings Neck Road, which leads to the Whiting's Neck development. (You should see a Wildlife Viewing sign at the turn.) The Yankauer Preserve is a little less than half a mile on the right.

From Martinsburg, WV go north on Rt 11. One mile past the Berkeley Plaza, turn right onto Berkeley Station Road Drive 6.3 miles (after 3 miles the road becomes Scrabble Rd.) then turn left on the Whitings Neck Road. The Preserve is .5 mile on the right.

Cool Spring Farm

From Berryville, Va. Take 340 toward Charles Town. The road narrows from 4 lane to 2 lane as you go into WV—stay on 340 past John’s restaurant on the left, Rippon (a tiny town) on the left until you see a used car lot coming up on the right and a diner on the left—turn left onto Wheatland Rd immediately before the diner. Continue on Wheatland (WV Rd 340/2) until it deadends (about 2 miles)—turn right (Lloyd Road). The first house on the left is Mrs. Thornton’s Cottage. The second entry on the left is Cool Spring Farm (has a sign and a split rail fence).

From Washington, D.C. Take 270 to Frederick, MD. As you approach Frederick take 70 west. Keep moving to the right as new lanes appear and you’ll see signs for 340 and Charles Town. Once the far right lanes turns off, immediately get in left lane as 340 is a quick left. As you approach Charles Town (you’ll pass a WalMart on the right) 340 will turn off to the right toward Berryville and Leesburg—continue on it for almost 6 miles. The 4 lane highway ends and it becomes a two lane road. Soon you’ll pass a diner on the right, a produce stand on the left and you’ll make a right hand turn immediately after the diner onto Wheatland Road (WVA Rd 340/2). Continue on Wheatland until it deadends (about 2 miles)—turn right (Lloyd Road). The first house on the left is Mrs. Thornton’s Cottage. The second entry on the left is Cool Spring Farm (has a sign and a split rail fence).
